Signs Your Bra Doesn't Fit Properly (And What to Do About It)

Most women wear the wrong bra size without realising it. Studies suggest that as many as eight in ten women are wearing an incorrectly fitting bra. The consequences are real: shoulder pain, back aches, poor posture, and clothes that never sit quite right no matter how well they fit everywhere else.

Here are the most common signs that your bra isn't working for you, and exactly what each one means.

1. The band rides up at the back

If the back band of your bra lifts upward throughout the day, rising toward your shoulder blades, the band is too large. The band should sit in a straight horizontal line around your torso, parallel to the floor. A band that rides up is providing almost no support — all the weight of your bust is falling on your straps instead, which causes the shoulder pain and neck tension that many women incorrectly attribute to large bust size.

Fix: Try a smaller band size. If you're in a 36B, try a 34C (sister sizing — same cup volume, smaller band).

2. The straps dig into your shoulders

Straps that leave marks or cause discomfort after a few hours of wear are carrying too much of the load. This is almost always a band fit issue, not a strap issue. Tightening straps to compensate for a too-loose band only makes the digging worse. The straps should provide about 20% of total support — the band does the rest.

Fix: Loosen the straps slightly and check the band fit first. Wider straps also help distribute pressure, which is why wireless bras with broader band constructions often feel more comfortable for larger busts.

3. Cups gap at the top or overflow at the sides

Gaping at the top of the cup means the cup is too large. The fabric should lie smooth against the breast with no air pocket visible at the top. Conversely, if breast tissue is spilling over the top or sides of the cup, the cup is too small. This is the most common fit issue and it's usually a cup size problem rather than the bra style.

Fix: Gaping — try a cup size down. Spillage — try a cup size up. If one cup fits and one doesn't, fit to your larger breast and adjust the strap on the other side.

4. The center gore doesn't lie flat

The center gore is the small panel of fabric between the cups that sits against your sternum. If it's floating away from your body, the cups are too small — your breast tissue is pushing the cups outward. The gore should touch your sternum throughout the day.

Fix: This is almost always a sign you need a larger cup size. A well-fitting bra should anchor at the center without being pulled forward.

5. You're on the tightest hook from day one

Bras are designed to be worn on the loosest hook when new. The elastic in the band stretches over time, and the progressively tighter hooks allow you to maintain fit as the bra ages. If you're already on the tightest hook on a brand new bra, the band is too large. You'll have no adjustment range left as the bra breaks in.

Fix: Size down in the band immediately. This is not a comfort issue to push through — the bra will only get looser with wear.

6. The bra moves when you raise your arms

A properly fitting bra should stay in position when you move. If the band lifts, the cups shift, or the straps slip when you reach upward, the band is too loose or the straps need adjustment. In a fitting room, always raise your arms, twist side to side, and lean forward to check that everything stays in place.

The case for wireless bras that actually fit

Many women switch to wireless bras expecting instant comfort, only to find that a poorly fitting wireless bra is just as problematic as a poorly fitting underwire. A wireless bra still needs a firm, well-fitting band to provide support. The band does not become less important without the wire — if anything, band fit matters more.

The Seamless Cloud Cotton Anti-Sagging Bra uses a reinforced band construction that provides genuine lift and support without underwire, but only when fitted correctly. The Seamless Breathable Wireless Comfort Bra offers structured molded cups that maintain shape across sizes, making it easier to achieve a correct fit without the wire doing the work.

Use the size guide on each product page and measure your current band and bust before ordering. A correctly fitted wireless bra will be the most comfortable thing in your wardrobe. An incorrectly fitted one will feel no better than what you're already wearing.
