What Bra Size Am I? Band and Cup vs S, M, L Explained

You know you are a 34D. The bra you want to buy is sold in S, M, L and XL. Which one are you?

There is no single correct answer, and anyone who gives you one without asking about your band is guessing. Here is how the two systems actually relate, and how to translate between them without gambling on a return.

Why two systems exist at all

Band and cup sizing describes two measurements: the circumference of your ribcage, and the difference between that and your bust. It is precise, and it is why a 32DD and a 38B are completely different bras despite holding similar volume.

Alpha sizing, S through XL, describes one thing: roughly how much stretch fabric is needed. It exists because bralettes, bandeaus and wireless styles built from stretch knit do not need a rigid frame matched to a specific root shape. Fewer sizes means less inventory, which is why it is so common.

The trade is accuracy. Alpha sizing works well for soft, stretchy styles and works badly the further you get from a B or C cup.

The rough translation

Treat this as a starting point, not a rule. Every brand sets its own alpha ranges.

Alpha Typical band and cup range
XS 30A to 32A
S 32A to 34B
M 34B to 36C
L 36C to 38D
XL 38D to 40DD
2XL 40DD to 42DDD
3XL 42DDD and up

Notice that both numbers move together. This is the part people miss. Alpha sizing assumes your cup grows in step with your band, and if it does not, the translation breaks.

When alpha sizing fails you

Two body types get let down by S to XL charts, consistently.

Small band, large cup. A 30F has a narrow ribcage and significant volume. The alpha chart wants to send her to an L or XL based on cup, which will be far too loose in the band, or to an S based on band, which will not contain the cup. Neither works. She needs band and cup sizing.

Large band, small cup. A 42B has the opposite problem. The chart sends her to 2XL, which is correct on the band and swimming in the cup.

If either of those is you, filter for products sized in band and cup and skip alpha-sized styles entirely. It is not a preference, it is the only thing that will fit.

What counts as a big bra size?

This question comes up constantly, and the honest answer is that the letter tells you almost nothing on its own.

A D cup on a 30 band and a D cup on a 42 band are wildly different volumes. The letter is a ratio, not an absolute. This is also why the same person can be a D at one brand and a DDD at another without anything about her changing.

What actually matters practically is whether you are inside or outside the range most brands stock. Below a 32 band or above a 38, and above a DD cup, your options narrow sharply and you will need to shop from brands that size properly rather than in alpha.

Products sized both ways

Some of our range is alpha sized because the construction is stretch knit. Some is band and cup because it needs to be. Here is which is which.

Sized in band and cup

Lumisensy Strapless Mesh Underwire Balconette Bra sized in band and cup to G

Strapless Mesh Underwire Balconette Bra runs in true band and cup through to a G, which is what a strapless style needs if it is going to stay up.

Lumisensy Max Control High Impact Sports Bra in band and cup sizing

Max Control High Impact Sports Bra is band and cup for the same reason. High impact control cannot be approximated with an alpha size.

Sized S to XL and up

Lumisensy Comfort Adjustable Wireless Bra in alpha sizing through 3XL

Comfort Adjustable Wireless Bra works in alpha sizing precisely because the band adjusts, which absorbs most of the imprecision.

Comfort Wireless Full-Cup Bra runs through 3XL with full coverage cups, which is the alpha style that handles a fuller bust best.

What to do next

Measure once, properly, and write the number down. From there both systems become readable. Our home measuring guide covers the method, and the US, UK and EU conversion chart covers what your number becomes in other markets.

Frequently asked questions

What bra size is a medium?

Typically somewhere between a 34B and a 36C, but every brand sets its own range. Check the specific product's chart rather than assuming, particularly if your band and cup do not move together.

What bra size is a large?

Usually around 36C to 38D. As with medium, the range varies by brand and by how much stretch the fabric has.

What bra size is considered big?

The letter alone does not answer this, because cup volume is relative to band. Practically, options narrow above a DD cup and outside a 32 to 38 band, which is where you will need brands that size in band and cup.

Can I convert my band and cup size to S, M, L exactly?

No. You can get close, but alpha sizing assumes band and cup grow together. If yours do not, choose products sized in band and cup instead.

Should I size up or down if I am between alpha sizes?

Size down if the style has an adjustable band, since you can let it out. Size up if the band is fixed, since a band you cannot loosen is the harder problem.

Why is my size different at every brand?

Because cup letters are ratios rather than fixed volumes, and because brands set band tension differently. Use sister sizes to bridge the gap, explained in our size conversion guide.
