Bra That Doesn't Dig In: The 4 Causes and How to Fix Each One

A bra that digs in, at the ribs, the shoulders, or the sides, is not a fact of life you have to accept. Digging always has a cause, and the cause is always one of four things. Find yours below and the fix follows.

Cause 1: the underwire

The most common culprit. A wire concentrates the bra's entire hold onto two thin curves against your ribcage. If it sits even slightly off your natural crease, it presses into tissue all day. The fix is a wireless design with a molded support core, which spreads the same hold across the whole cup. Our comparison of wireless vs underwire after 40 covers this in depth.

Cause 2: the wrong size

A band too small digs at the ribs. Cups too small dig at the sides and top. Straps doing the band's job dig at the shoulders. The counterintuitive part: a too-big band also causes digging, because you tighten the straps to compensate. Size the band snug and level first, and the straps become passengers, not workhorses. Unsure which direction to go? Read do you size up or down in a wireless bra.

Cause 3: hard edges and seams

Narrow elastic, raised seams and hook hardware create pressure lines even in the right size. Bonded, seamless construction with wide soft edges lies flat against skin with nothing to press in.

Cause 4: dead elastic

An aging bra loses stretch unevenly, which creates tight spots where it used to be smooth. If a bra that was comfortable now digs, it is not you, it is the elastic reaching the end of its life.

A bra with nothing to dig

The CloudBound Wireless Jelly Bra removes all four causes at once: no wire, free size exchanges to get the fit right, seamless bonded edges, and a wide soft band. It is the construction our all-day comfort guide is built around, and the 60 day guarantee means the risk of trying it is zero.
